-Prologue-
It was another one of those endless days, grey and rainy. Laura chewed
her gum, clearly bored. I gave her a dark look, and she responded with
a shrug, rolling her eyes in annoyance. I grumbled softly and redirected
my attention to our German teacher. He rambled on about rhetoric and new
things we should read. I looked back at Laura.
Ever since my boyfriend, Jacob, told me that he had a crush on Laura last
school year and even went on a date with her, she had been a thorn in
my side.
I looked at him, and he returned my gaze. He gave me his familiar, innocent
smile. Then, he shifted his attention to the teacher, while my eyes lingered
on him.
Suddenly, he turned his head again, but he paused at Laura studying her
for a few seconds before redirecting his attention to me. Why had he stared
at her for so long? Did he still have some feelings for her?
I looked at Laura and she was staring at me with a questionable look.
At that moment, I decided she had to die.
It was like a switch had been flipped in my head. Suddenly, my mind fixated
only on this single thought. Instead of following the lesson, I obsessed
over how to best to kill Laura without getting caught.
Laura was a beautiful girl and it felt like every boy
in the class was into her. But it was also hard not to be into her. No
one could overlook her: she was tall, slender and blonde. Her blue eyes
always seemed to sparkle and she had a smile ready for everyone. The boys
vied for her attention, and most of the girls in our class tried to be
friends with her. She really enjoyed being the center of this attention.
Her best friends, Hannah and Samantha, were a bit more inconspicuous with
their brown hair.
Laura had chosen them well. With her long blonde hair, she always stood
out from the rest of this clique.
Since the temperatures became so mild at the end of February,
I cycled to school every day. Regardless of the fact that it was still
dark in the morning, I cherished the shortcut along the dirt roads. Even
though my mother always warned against it, I felt no fear while riding
my bike there. The silence and darkness always provided me with a calming
feeling.
When I told Jacob about it, he just gave me a strange look. Lately, he’s
been giving me that look more and more. We’ve been together for
four months now, but I still haven’t been able to interpret all
of his looks correctly.
Was it really only four months? The time seemed much longer to me. At
first, the English pronunciation of his name seemed strange to me. But
I quickly got used to it, and today, I couldn’t imagine my life
without Jacob or his name. I knew he just belonged to me. He was just
mine!
Jacob looked at Laura again, and she smiled discreetly at him. Did they
both think I wouldn’t notice it? I was seething with anger inside.
The bell signaling the end of today’s school day broke me out of
my thoughts. I packed up my things and hurried out.
I left the school building in a rage, hoping that no one would stand in
my way. I just wanted to be alone with my thoughts.
„Hey Corinne, wait a minute!“ Someone called my name. „Are
you okay?“ Jacob asked.
When I hesitated, he grabbed my arm, turning me to face him.
„What’s up? You took off so fast; it was hard for me to catch
you up. Are you angry with me?“
I looked directly into his brown eyes, and my anger faded a little bit.
With that innocent deer look, I could never stay angry with him for long.
He leaned down and pressed his mouth to mine. Jacob was about half a head
taller than I was, slender and well built. Feeling his soft lips on mine
made my heart beat faster and faster.
The time seemed to stand still, and everything else in the world lost
all meaning. Jacob and I were the only things that mattered. He pulled
me closer and I felt the warmth of his body.
I looked deeply into his eyes, knowing everything was alright. Nothing
and no one could come between us.
„See you tomorrow, Jacob!“ Laura whistled in a sweet voice
as she walked past us, and the anger flared up in me again.
